The inaugural WeHo Pride event kicks off this weekend with celebrations in and around West Hollywood Park including a free WeHo Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival (formerly known as the One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival), the Dyke March, a Women’s Freedom Festival and its own WeHo Pride Parade (leading the parade: WeHo’s Inaugural “Grand Marshal Icon” is Janelle Monáe and JoJo Siwa is WeHo Pride’s “Next Gen Icon”). With LA Pride leaving West Hollywood, WeHo needed to do its own party, and it needed to be just as big and bodacious. After the game, there’ll be fireworks and DJ Bowie J. The National Anthem will be sung by gay recording artist Wils, and the Dodgers will recognize former Los Angeles Dodger Glenn Burke, the first openly gay MLB player, during pregame festivities. Score an exclusive commemorative Dodger LGBTQ+ game jersey at this ninth annual Pride event. LGBTQ+ Pride Night at Dodger Stadium (June 3)

The Venice Pride Festival takes place the next day, and it features a plethora of drag, music and dance performers (from Bettie Bathhouse to Luna Lovebad), and DJs, including the boys from Bears in Space, to name one of many. Opening night’s “Light Up The Night for Equality” viewing party on the roof of the Hotel Irwin on Friday, June 3, is a great way to kick off the fun, and proceeds benefit Project Contrast (a nonprofit empowering LGBTQIA+ youth). It all starts off with the Global Rainbow laser installation, Yvette Mattern’s large-scale public art piece featuring seven rays of laser light illuminating across the California coast. But this weekend is its biggest moment to shine, literally and figuratively. The high-profile initiatives helped mobilize the event, which evolved into a program dedicated to saving lives through acceptance and amplification all year long. Roosterfish ultimately reopened, but in between, the area got a new bar called The Birdcage and erected a Pride Flag Lifeguard Tower. It was an effort to recognize the gay community in the neighborhood, which is significant in size and social involvement. Venice’s first Pride celebration took place on June 3, 2016, following the closure of popular gay bar Roosterfish. This year, we have more options than ever to do so. Post-pandemic, we’re all excited to get out and be together again, celebrating life and love of all forms. Along with support by straight/cis allies in these environments, Pride events aren’t just parties, they’re safe spaces where people relate, educate and celebrate. The fight for equality and self-expression in the gay community most definitely remains. While there’s power in numbers, this growth also has led to backlash, as bigoted politicians try to supress it with legistlation, misinformation and discrimation toward what they don’t understand and won’t accept. Society has come a long way since the first Pride events, but we are still making strides in terms of understanding and respecting the queer community, especially as a new generation has come to highlight the significance of both gender and sexual identity via entertainment, social media, activism and more. The LGBTQIA+ community is stronger, louder and larger than ever. There’s also more to celebrate in general. Both have a ton of fun activities and since they’re on subsequent weekends, we say the more the merrier. LA Pride has Christina Aguilera headlining, while Weho Pride has Jesse J and Lil’ Kim. Heading off those festivities, The City of West Hollywood now has its own event called “WeHo Pride” taking place this weekend. LA Pride now will have its march on Hollywood Boulevard (where the inaugural Pride march took place in 1970) and a concert at LA Historic Park, both next weekend. Most notably, LA Pride’s organizers Christopher Street West and the city of West Hollywood have parted ways, so each group will hold its own events for the first time this year. 2022 Pride marks the most event-packed month in Los Angeles ever, and there are a few reasons for this.
